Introduction

    My name is Alyssa. I am pursuing an undergraduate degree in accounting. I was drawn into my major by my passion for problem-solving. I was a huge fan of statistics in high school. I love learning. I think it's something we do our entire lives, and I'm not interested in stopping anytime soon. I like writing short stories and poetry when the writer inside my head accosts me, and I like drawing on the borders of my papers. I'm not great at sewing, but I also do some costume work. It's generally only for myself. I don't think I would trust myself to sew clothing for someone else at this point in time. My passion for learning and creating extends to my appreciation of art, and I look forward to exploring art in this class.

   Some of the ways I express myself through art are drawing and painting. I love art as a way of understanding myself better. I think all art reflects people. Perhaps it mirrors the artist, people whom the artist has known, or the people intended to view it. The genre of art that I hate and love--the self-portrait--is a victim of exaggeration. Self-portraits take me more time than I care for, yet I find myself doing them anyway. How can someone hate something frequented so often? If I hated it, I would probably do it less. It might be better to say I strongly dislike my partiality for self-portraits. For me, art is a way of reflecting on my own emotions and giving them the care they deserve. I have not always been attentive to them, so I value my ability to engage with them through my art.

    Such an interesting take on art and your relationship to it. I believe as humans we gravitate toward some outlet where we feel we can truly express ourselves whether that be performing or writing or art. I'm glad you've found a way to understand, process, and appreciate your emotions.

    Hi Alyssa! It's lovely to meet you! I don't have a talent for drawing or painting, but love that you know how to. Painting is one thing that I really want to start doing during my time as a stay-at-home Mom in order to do something fun and creative. As far as costume work, is there a certain style that you do? I instantly think cosplay when I hear this, but am curious as to what you like to do. I wish you all the best luck this semester!

      Hi, Cassandra! I do cosplay, but I feel like that can cover a lot of different subjects. That's why I specifically talked about putting costumes together. I do a lot of my work impulsively, and I like to be as resourceful as possible. I will thrift old pieces and try to turn them into something else. I also hold onto scraps because I typically find another use for them. I've done a few paper mache pieces for my costumes in the past. Painting is so fun! I think one fun painting project you could do is using watercolor and ink together. Maybe doing a low-risk piece with watercolor and inking something over it after it dries.     I love hearing how you love learning. I feel the same passion towards learning. I recently chose a masters program, where the certification is always about keeping up with the science and learning new approaches. One of the most fascinating aspects of it is how there will always be continuous learning. I also like creating costumes. I mainly do FX makeup and create accessories. I am lucky my spouse knows their way around a sewing machine for fabric. Lastly, using art to find our identities and understand ourselves better is a great way to think of art. That is how I like to look at writing and how I reflect about past experiences. I look forward to your future posts!

      Hi, Mariah! It's good to hear about other people's passions, so I'm glad you shared that with me. I think continuous learning is so great, and it's something I will have to do in my future career someday as well. When it comes to costumes, I've been struggling with hand sewing for a while. I sometimes have help, but that's not often. I love writing too! I like to write poetry and short stories. It's a great way of reflecting and processing your own emotions. Thank you for commenting!

    Hi Alyssa!
    I agree that art does reflect people; It is the artist's imagination at work. I am always captivated by paintings based on the artist's personality or memoir. It makes me appreciate art from a different perspective. Whenever I go to art museums, I search for the meaning behind the paintings because it feels like they have a story on their own.
    I also enjoyed writing short stories when I was in high school; it was fun to expand my imagination and create my characters. I'm excited to explore more about art through this class. Thank you for sharing!

Romantic Era

Art Nouveau The Black Cat   The Black Ca t by Aubrey Beardsley was created circa 1894 (TheArtStory.org). It is a black and white drawing Beardsley designed among three other commissions to complement Edgar Allen Poe’s "Tales of Mystery and the Imagination." This specific illustration is intended for Poe's “The Black Cat”. Beardsley was appointed an art editor and illustrator for “The Yellow Book” in 1894. At this point, he moved into 114 Cambridge Street in London with his sister (ab2020.org). This is an example of an Art Nouveau piece. It relies on lines and curves to highlight the piece's focus. This specific illustration is just white and black; it is only negative and dark space. Additionally, it does not utilize hues, adding to the deliberate shapes that form in the contrasting values.
