Non-Western Exhibit: Modern Chinese Calligraphy

Chinese Calligraphy Chinese calligraphy is deliberate and distinct. It literally means “beautiful handwriting” (AsiaSociety.org). How and what a calligrapher writes is important to the craft. In ancient times, calligraphy was an art reserved for scholars, but contemporary Chinese artists today revitalize an ancient practice in the modern day. An important age for calligraphy was the 4th century when the Kaishu style was formed. This style is popular, flexible, and still relevant today (ChinaArtLover.com). Wang Xizhi greatly influenced the Kaishu style by developing the running script, which allowed an artist to form characters without lifting the brush. Calligraphy evokes smooth motion and mimics the workings of nature (AsiaSociety.org).  Wang Dongling 王冬龄 : TANG Xianzu, ‘Peony Pavilion: Introduction of the Thrush’, Entangled Script, 2017 This is Peony Pavilion: Introduction of the Thrush from Entangled Script by Wang Dongling 王冬龄 . Post Modern Exhibit

Post-Modern art rejects the era preceding it. There is a re-examination of what composes art, and greater diversity in materials in art. Innovation in technology provides new outlets to create art. Art in the Post-Modern era is more diverse in subject matter and material. The idea of deconstruction is also very popular. Deconstruction can refer to taking things apart and the lack of universal meanings in art. The pieces I’ve compiled here exhibit the use of diverse materials in art that is so prominent in post-modernism. Faith Wilding  Crocheted Environment This fiber art installation is Crocheted Environment by Faith Wilding. It is composed of Woolworth’s Sweetheart acrylic yarn and sisal rope, and it was created in 1972 for the exhibition Womanhouse . It was originally staged in an abandoned mansion in Hollywood, and it is also referred to as the “womb room” (ICABoston.org).  This is the kind of art that you can walk around in. I like the size of this as well as the ability a view

Early Modern Art

Early Modern art covers a vast number of styles and distinctions in art because the period in time was such a busy one. There was a devastating war, innovations in technology, and a redefining of art. One major influence of some of the art from this era is The Great Depression. Taking The Great Depression into account, I have selected three pieces by three different artists for examination.  Hotel Room Edward Hopper used oil on canvas in 1931 to paint the Hotel Room . During this point in his life he lived in New York and completed a great deal of work in the Washington Square studio he owned with his wife (Biography.com). Hopper is a prominent realist painter of the 20th century.  This painting depicts a woman sitting, partially clothed, on a neatly made bed in a hotel room. She hunches forward, her shoulders parallel to her thighs. The angle of her upper arms falling parallel to her legs, resting on the ground. This room is full of lines and saturated colors, and the upper half of he

Romantic Era

Art Nouveau The Black Cat   The Black Ca t by Aubrey Beardsley was created circa 1894 (TheArtStory.org). It is a black and white drawing Beardsley designed among three other commissions to complement Edgar Allen Poe’s "Tales of Mystery and the Imagination." This specific illustration is intended for Poe's “The Black Cat”. Beardsley was appointed an art editor and illustrator for “The Yellow Book” in 1894. At this point, he moved into 114 Cambridge Street in London with his sister (ab2020.org). This is an example of an Art Nouveau piece. It relies on lines and curves to highlight the piece's focus. This specific illustration is just white and black; it is only negative and dark space. Additionally, it does not utilize hues, adding to the deliberate shapes that form in the contrasting values. The artist’s simple details bring out what attributes are present in the piece. The lines are all curved and short. The cat is the same tone as the darkness around him, separated f
